You can set up a bank account on a WHV before you even enter Australia if you go ahead and use the National Australian Bank (NAB) and you can sign up here. You need to have been granted your WHV already then when you land in Australia you just have to pop into any NAB branch and they will set up your bank account on a WHV within 10 minutes. Make sure you bring in the email they send you with your bank details in.
They will also set up your online banking and when you arrive and send your debit card a few days later, or you can pick it up in-store. You can give them a hotel or a hostel address for your card details its fine. Applying for an account online you also get the option of creating an iSaver account which will give you 4% interest for the first 4 months and 2% after that which is good.
You can go for other banks such as the commonwealth bank or ANZ if you like, both both of these charge you $5 a month fee for using there card while the NAB does not. NAB also offers a lower fee when withdrawing from ATMs which are not there own compared too all other banks. I belive the commonwealth bank has the most amount of ATMs but they charge more or withdrawals and a monthly fee for having a bank account.
pro tip: When you want to withdraw some money go to a shop that offers cash back, buy something you need and ask them to give you how much cash back you need, this will save you paying $2 for withdrawing if you can’t find ATM by NAB. It took me lass than 20 minutes setting up a bank account on a WHV in England, then another 10 minutes inside the branch go to get it all up and running at NAB.
