The country is in its infancy in terms of freedom and it will be some years yet till they embrace the western culture.

Only a couple of years back there were no ATM machines and it was almost impossible to get a Visa into the country unless you were with a government party.

Things have changed dramatically since Ang Suu Kyis’ struggle for human rights bought the attention of the world to Burma’s plight.

Myanmar is just growing up, many Burmese girls still wear traditional dress and have strong family values. There is little nightlife outside Yangon and even that is limited.

Having said all that the Burmese people are coming out from their shell and they are very sociable. Like their neighbors they enjoy partying and especially drinking. O

ne of their better beers is called Myanmar Beer and Mandalay Rum is frequently a popular tipple, amazingly this costs around $3 a bottle.

Where can you meet Burmese girls?

One of the best ways to start to find a Burmese girl is through a dating site. Asian Dating is probably the best for Yangon and Mandalay.

There are no Go Go bars or Strip clubs so don’t expect to find any, this is not Bangkok or Pattaya and you will have to do things the more old fashioned way.

Yangon the former capital your best bet for finding a local Burmese girl. It has the most nightlife activity and more places to socialize. So we will concentrate our focus on Rangoon

Local bars

These dim lit bars are great fun, very cheap and a great way to start the evening. They are easy to find as they are dimly lit and normally have a girl singing on stage.

Many are around the Chinatown area and 19^th street. Power Light beer station being one of the most popular, and 50^th street Bar is well worth a visit.

One quite unique feature is many have a catwalk coming from the stage and models will walk down amongst the tables. You can buy flowers very cheaply from inside the bar and choose a girl to come and sit with you and have a drink. The Burmese girls that frequent beer stations don’t talk very good English but it is nice to have a pretty Myanmar chick giving you attention.

Nightclubs

As usual nightclubs are one of the best places to visit to meet and pick up Burmese girls. Until three years ago Yangon hardly had any but now there are many places to choose from. Around Tein Gyi Zay Plaza is an area where a few can be found

Up to about 1am they will also have model shows for your entertainment then after that things are pretty much the same as any other club. The clubs tend to close a lot earlier than say Thailand, Cambodia or Laos.

They kick you out around 3am and then there is pretty not much more available to do.

Some of the best clubs are: JJ, Channel V, Pioneer, Music Club, DJ Bar (many working girls here)

Party and raves

In Rangoon western style parties are now coming very popular.

Try and get an invite from perhaps a Burmese girl from a Beer Station. But expect to be a little surprised as normally the men and women sit on opposite sides of the room.

This is not a religious or status thing, it is simply assumed they have more to say to one another.

At a more formal event or even a picnic, it is customary for the men to dine first because they are perceived to be the busier of the two sexes.

Burmese hookers

Yangon is not inundated with street walkers but of course they can be found. Usually near the big hotels and also around the bus station.

They are almost entirely from Burma so there is not the problem of trying to sort the wheat out from the chaff. As always make it pretty clear what you want for your dollar.

If you want cheap hookers then there’s a lot of prostitutes in Cambodia  and you can meet normal girls in Phom Penh.

CAFES / RESTAURANTS

Myanmar does not really have a coffee culture yet, even Rangoon. But there are a few places that are dotted about that you can have a cup of Java and talk to a Burmese girl.

Many are located in or near the big hotels so finding them is not a problem.

Burmese girls are very friendly but sometimes quite formal. They won’t just come up and talk to you because you are a westerner. The Burmese culture is a mixture of Chinese, Indian, European and Asian. And some favor a particular trait so you don’t quite know the correct manner to behave.

My tip anywhere in Yangon is to be as polite as you can towards the Burmese girls, try and get to know then a little first before you become the normal you.

Treat Yangon and Burma as a whole differently than other parts of South East Asia because it is, it is very different indeed. And that goes for the Burmese girls as well, you will find them a little more reserved and a lot shyer compared to the Thai or the Cambodian ladies.
